Montana Festivals and Events by Month: Rodeos, Powwows, Music

The recurring rodeos, powwows, fairs and festivals worth planning a Montana trip around, month by month.

Montana's event calendar is built around summer. Between late June and Labor Day almost every county holds a fair or rodeo, the tribal nations hold their largest powwows, and two free or low-cost festivals in Butte and Bozeman draw crowds from across the state. Winter brings a smaller set of town traditions, mostly in December and February.

Below are the recurring events that are worth planning a trip around, with the pattern each one follows and the dates we could confirm. Where a 2027 date has been announced we say so; where it has not, use the pattern and check the organiser's site in spring.

February: Whitefish Winter Carnival

Whitefish's winter carnival is held on the first weekend of February, with a grand parade on the Saturday. The 2027 carnival, the 68th, is set for February 5–7 with the theme "Enchantment Under the Sea", and carnival buttons go on sale at the Christmas Stroll on December 11, 2026. Pair it with a ski day at Whitefish Mountain Resort.

May: Miles City Bucking Horse Sale

Held every May since 1951, the Bucking Horse Sale combines a working auction of bucking horses for rodeo stock contractors with rodeo action, concerts and a weekend-long street party. It falls on the third full weekend of May. In 2026 it ran from a Thursday concert on May 14 to a Sunday bronc match on May 17, with the sale itself on Saturday, May 16. No 2027 dates had been posted in October 2026. Miles City has limited lodging, so book early, and allow time for the Range Riders Museum, which reopens on April 15.

Late June and July: rodeos and powwows

  • Little Bighorn anniversary (June 25–26): the battle's anniversary brings commemorations at and around Little Bighorn Battlefield. Programmes change each year, so check the monument's site in June.
  • Livingston Roundup Rodeo: a PRCA rodeo at the Park County Fairgrounds with evening performances around Independence Day. In 2026 it ran July 1–4, with fireworks after the July 4 show.
  • North American Indian Days, Browning: the Blackfeet Nation's four-day celebration, usually in the second week of July, centred on a powwow. Browning is roughly 25 road miles from St. Mary, so it fits a Glacier east-side trip. 2027 dates were not posted as of October 2026.
  • Bannack Days: the third weekend of July at the 1862 gold-rush ghost town, with living-history demonstrations of frontier life. The 2026 event on July 18–19 was the 50th (it began in 1976); admission was $5 for ages 6 and up and $20 per family, and parking was tight, with shuttle vans from the outer lots.
  • Last Chance Stampede and Fair, Helena: the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds hosts a fair, evening concerts and three nights of PRCA rodeo. The 66th edition ran July 21–25, 2026, with a Saturday parade downtown.

July: two music festivals

Montana Folk Festival, Butte. Admission is free to all performances over three days in Uptown Butte, and donations are collected on site. It is held on the second weekend of July; 2026 ran July 10–12 and drew an estimated 170,000 people, close to the 2025 record of 180,000. The 2027 festival is announced for July 9–11. Lodging in Butte fills early, so consider Anaconda or Helena as a base.

Red Ants Pants Music Festival, White Sulphur Springs. A four-day festival in a small ranching town in central Montana, with on-site camping and proceeds going to the Red Ants Pants Foundation. The 15th festival ran July 23–26, 2026, with campgrounds opening the evening before. We found no 2027 announcement or hiatus notice as of October 2026; past lineups were announced in February.

Late July and August: fairs and festivals

  • Montana State Fair, Great Falls: nine days at Montana ExpoPark; 2026 ran July 24 to August 1, and 2025 ran July 25 to August 2. 2027 dates were listed as to be announced.
  • Sweet Pea Festival, Bozeman: arts, music and food in Lindley Park, founded in 1978. The 49th festival ran August 7–9, 2026; adult three-day presale passes were $40, children's tickets were free, and three-day passes at the gate were $60.
  • Montana Cowboy Poetry Gathering, Lewistown: four days of cowboy poetry and western music, mainly at Fergus High School; the 40th gathering ran August 6–9, 2026.
  • Crow Fair, Crow Agency: first held in 1904 and known as the "teepee capital of the world" for its camp of hundreds of lodges. In 2026 Visit Montana listed August 12–17, with August 14–16 open to visitors. Ask before photographing people and follow the announcer's instructions on photography during dances.

September and December

Dillon's Jaycee Labor Day Rodeo, billed as "Montana's Biggest Weekend", ran September 4–7, 2026: a ranch rodeo on Friday, PRCA performances on Saturday and Sunday and a parade on Labor Day itself. Bannack is roughly 25 road miles away.

December brings evening Christmas strolls. Bozeman's is held on the first Saturday of December along Main Street; the 46th is on December 5, 2026, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with Santa's walk, a lighting ceremony and wagon rides. Whitefish's stroll is on Friday, December 11, 2026, roughly 5 to 9 p.m., with a tree lighting, carols and food vendors.

Before you go

  • Book rooms for the Folk Festival, Crow Fair and the Bucking Horse Sale months ahead; host towns are small.
  • Confirm 2027 dates with each organiser in spring before booking.
  • At powwows, ask before photographing people and never photograph ceremonies.
  • Bring cash for small-town vendors, and sun protection for outdoor arenas.

Details checked October 2026.
