St. Mary

East-side Glacier gateway at the end of Going-to-the-Sun Road

History The Blackfeet call the place Natoaki, "Holy Woman". St. Mary lies on the western edge of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, which borders the park along its eastern side, and the visitor centre itself stands on reservation land. The village grew as the eastern terminus of Going-to-the-Sun Road, built between 1921 and 1932 and dedicated on 15 July 1933; the road is about 50 miles long, crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass (6,646 feet) and is a National Historic Landmark. The Great Northern Railway's Many Glacier Hotel, finished in 1915 on the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake to the north, made this side of the park a destination long before the road was completed.

What to See The St. Mary Visitor Center stands next to the St. Mary entrance on Going-to-the-Sun Road and is open daily from late May to early October. Saint Mary Lake, the park's second-largest lake, is about 9.9 miles long at an elevation of 4,484 feet. Wild Goose Island, a small rock island that rises only about 14 feet above the water, is the classic view from the road along the north shore. Logan Pass, about 18 miles from the entrance, has a visitor centre that opens daily in peak season. Many Glacier Hotel, a Swiss-chalet-style National Historic Landmark on Swiftcurrent Lake, is about 21 miles from St. Mary by road.

Outdoors The east-side trailheads along Saint Mary Lake and in the Many Glacier valley are the main reason to stay here. In 2026 a Many Glacier hiker shuttle ran from 1 July to 21 September, connecting with the St. Mary Visitor Center. Logan Pass parking was limited to three hours from 1 July to 7 September 2026, enforced around the clock, and the new Logan Pass shuttle required a ticket from Recreation.gov. There were no vehicle reservations in 2026. This is grizzly country: carry bear spray on every trail and store food properly. Vehicles over 21 feet long or 8 feet wide may not drive between Rising Sun and Avalanche Creek.

Getting There St. Mary is on US-89, which runs north towards Canada and south to Browning. In summer the fastest route from the Flathead Valley is over Going-to-the-Sun Road; when it is closed, the drive from Glacier Park International Airport is about 109 miles by US-2 over Marias Pass. The nearest Amtrak stops are East Glacier Park in summer and Browning in winter. Non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an extra $100 per person at the park unless they hold an annual pass.

When to Go July to mid-September is the main season: Going-to-the-Sun Road opened fully on 22 June in 2026 and usually stays open to the third Monday of October. The visitor centre opens from late May to early October. Winters are long and cold, with about 118 inches of snow a year and a record low of minus 40°F, and most services close. Planned utility work around St. Mary means the campground has partial closures from autumn 2026 to spring 2027.
