Hyalite Canyon is the mountain valley directly south of Bozeman in the Custer Gallatin National Forest. A paved road climbs almost 12 miles from the edge of town to Hyalite Reservoir, and from there trails fan out to waterfalls, lakes and peaks in the Gallatin Range. It is one of the most popular outdoor areas near the city in every season: hiking and camping in summer, and in winter a major ice-climbing area.

The reservoir sits at about 6,700 feet and covers about 206 acres. It is held back by Middle Creek Dam, built in the 1940s and enlarged in 1993; the lake was called Middle Creek Reservoir until the late 1960s. It is a no-wake lake, so small motorboats are allowed but waterskiing and tubing are not. Anglers fish for Yellowstone cutthroat, rainbow and brook trout and Arctic grayling.

The easiest walk is to Palisade Falls, a paved trail of about half a mile to a waterfall pouring over a band of cliffs; the pavement stops a little short of the base. Grotto Falls, at the end of the main road, is about 2.5 miles round trip. Longer hikes reach Hyalite Lake (about 11 miles round trip) and Hyalite Peak. The Hyalite Creek and East Fork trails share use on a timetable in midsummer, with set days for hikers and horses and others for bikes and motorbikes. The Forest Service campgrounds (Hood Creek, Chisholm and Langohr) run from about mid-May to mid-September and can be booked on Recreation.gov.

Winter is when Hyalite is best known. More than 250 ice routes form on the canyon walls, most reached from the Grotto Falls parking area, and the Bozeman Ice Festival is held here every December; 2026 is its 30th year. The road has been plowed in winter since 2008, with the Grotto Falls lot kept open through March 31.

Every spring the road closes to vehicles to protect it during the thaw. In 2026 it was closed from 6 p.m. on March 31 to May 15 and reopened May 16; walkers and cyclists may still use it during the closure. Practical tip: in winter local guides recommend all-wheel drive and winter tyres for the canyon road, and after a heavy snowfall give the plows a day before driving up.
