Apgar is the small village inside Glacier National Park at the south end of Lake McDonald, about 2 miles from the West Glacier entrance. It is the practical center of the park's west side: the Apgar Visitor Center doubles as the transit center, the park's backcountry permit office is here, and the village has one of the park's most popular campgrounds, a boat launch and rentals, a general store, a gift shop and two small lodgings. The pebble beach looks straight up the lake to the mountains around its head.

Long before the park, the Kootenai met here for ceremonies; their name for the place translates as "the place where they dance". In the 1890s Milo Apgar, Frank Geduhn and Charlie Howe built homes at the foot of the lake intending to farm. Farming failed, so they turned to looking after travelers, and the settlement that grew up around them took Apgar's name. The western artist Charles M. Russell kept a summer home, Bull Head Lodge, in the area.

The village is a base rather than a destination in its own right. Short walks lead along the shore and to the campground, and a paved bike path through the woods links Apgar with West Glacier; it is the only path in the park where leashed dogs are allowed, when it is clear of snow. In summer Apgar is the starting point for most red-bus tours on Going-to-the-Sun Road, and in 2026 it was one of the two west-side boarding points for the ticketed Logan Pass shuttle. Boats must be inspected for aquatic invasive species at the Apgar station before launching.

Apgar matters most outside summer. The visitor center is open daily from mid-May to mid-October and on weekends in fall, winter and spring, as staffing allows, and its restrooms stay open all winter. The road from West Glacier past Apgar to Lake McDonald Lodge is plowed all year, rangers lead snowshoe walks on winter weekends, and loop B of the campground stays open for first-come, first-served primitive camping. Most shops and lodgings close for the winter.

Practical tip: if you are entering from the west, stop here first for trail and road status, which the visitor center posts daily in season, and fill water bottles at the filling station before heading up the lake.
